Trentham Milers Beaten By Flying Time

(From Our Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON, January 22.

Flying Time improved the good record of South Island milers at Trenthani when she won the January Handicap on the second day of the Wellington Cup meeting today.

This was her second successive win for her Canterbury owner, Mr K. G. McLaughlin, and for G. G. Hampton’s Washdyke stable. Her other win was at the Wairarapa New

Year meeting.

Only for the hard state of the tracks she would have done more racing on the trip. The heavy rain, early this morning brightened Flying Time’s chances considerably. N. Eastwood had Flying Time in front early and then eased her a few places. She had Vitamise, Stetson. Sheonat and Spiborough to pass coming to the home turn and managed to do that going to the furlong. Then she resisted stout challenges from Sir Henry and Advance General, both strong finishers in the middle of the track.

Sir Henry did not appear to be really at ease on the rain-affected track, but nearly managed to complete a double for the meeting. Advance General passed eight rivals from the halfmile for his third. He was well clear of the others, which were led in by Gitano and Sheonat. Vitamise. the leader from the six furlongs to the home turn, weakened badly and finished tenth. Windvale Lad improved a few places for eighth and looked as it he could be all the better for the race.

Picright could not muster much speed after a slow start. He was eleventh. Helped By Rain Summer Day and Astrazami, two moderate performers under different conditions in the high-weight on Saturday, galloped with much more freedom on an easy track to fill the first two places in the Mungaroa High-weight. " Summer Day, an eight-year-old Summertime gelding from Pihama, won by a length and a quarter after leading over the last furlong. He was in the middle of the field at the mile, a little closer at the half-mile and not far from the front bunch on the home turn. Astrazami came from near the tail of the field for his second and had to be brought fairly wide to get a run. Barta Boy was a faster finisher for third, three parts of a length back and a length clear of Rocket Range, which was responsible for most of the pace. The favourite. The Squire, disappointingly weakened from the second line and finished eighth, just behind the well-backed Lord Pilate, which came in for strong support when G. F. Hughes took the mount. Well-Earned Win Tara’s Pride, a dominating favourite, carried the topweight of 9-5 to a meritorious, decisive win in the Nursery Handicap. Mr C. W. Ansford’s Pride of Kildare colt led from outside the two furlongs and won by a length and a half from Gold Chick. Tara’s Pride earned his win, his third on the course, after a good second to the three-year-old Key in the Wellington Stakes on Saturday. Gold Chick, the Wellington Stakes fourth, was a class above any of the others. Sir Barton was in a gap of six lengths third, just beating Tonnerre. Trial By Jury was a length and a half back

fifth and the others straggled in. The big disappointment of the race was Prince Manu. He led for three furlongs or so, but surrendered his lead without a struggle and finished tenth. Douro Cup Diamond Head, a good sixth in the Pencarrow

Handicap on Saturday, showed her ability as a miler by winning the Douro Cup at good odds.

She came to the front well outside the furlong and won by a length from the Pencarrow Handicap winner. Gold Find. Diamond Head was ridden by R. J. Skelton and W. D. Skelton rode Gold Find. Diamond Head was in a trailing position for a start but drifted a few places about half-way through the race. Then she was brought into a contending position as soon as they straightened, and it was clear a furlong out that she would last it out well enough to win. Gold Find was in the middle of the field with Diamond Head art the half-mile, but made a quick run wide out up to the leaders on the home turn. The Riccarton hack. Timna. finished brilliantly from far back for third half a length back. He just beat the top-weight, Sage, which also came from well back.
