BOAT BUILT ON LAWN
Wellington Project
“The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, January 22. A front lawn in Hataitai. has been transformed into a boat-building yard for a three-year construction job on a 42ft motor-sailer. “We may have to take the eaves off the house,” said the builder, Mr G. Abernethy, aged 27. The 42ft length of the boat took in the entire width of his own home section, plus 18m each end from the neighbours on each side, said Mr Abernethy. The ketch would be powered by a diesel engine and would sleep six or seven when -completed, he said. Asked how the 12ft beam would be fitted in the narrow confines of the front lawn, he said: “We should clearance each side, but we may have to take the eaves off the house before we are finished.”
A friend. Mr R. Holford, is helping Mr Abernethy, who said he estimated the cost of materials at about £3OOO The boat would be built entirely of kauri and other New Zealand timber apart from the keel of Australian hardwood.
The boat would be used for pleasure cruising, and might make a trip across the Tasman. It would displace 12 tons and was being built to an Athol Burns design The draft would be 6ft 6in laden.
