Harpo Conducts ‘Haydn’

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 21

Harpo Marx conducted the Philadelphia Orchestra last night. Wearing a frock coat with biege-coloured trousers, white tennis shoes, and a battered top hat. he mounted the- podium after Leopold Stokowski had conducted the orchestra for its one hundred and fifth anniversary performance Harpo soon tired of normal conducting, turned his baton into a fishing rod and reeled in an invisible catch Then he ordered several musicians from the stage and, when they declined to move, fired blanks from s toy pistol at them

Eight children filed on to the stage with toy drums, whistles, and some weird instruments Haroo conducted ■hem and the full orchestra in the Symphony in C major known as Haydn’s “Toy Symphony” Encouraged by 'he audience's enthusiastic response. Harpo obliged with popular tunes on his harp and finally on a harmonica

IThe Toy Symphony.’’ lore ■bought to be the work of Haydn, has recently been shown to be by Leopold Mozart, the father of the famous Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.]
