TEHERAN, January 22 The Iranian authorities have ordered the University of Teheran to close indefinitely, after a three-hour pitched battle yesterday between university students and security forces in Teheran. Reports in university circles said that the deans of all faculties attended a special meeting and passed a resolution to resign, the British United Press reported A spokesman said the Prime Minister (Dr. Amini) was seriously studying the possibility of dissolving the university. It would remain shut if it continued to be a centre for intrigue by opponents of the Government’s land reform programmes.
The Government has banned all demonstrations called by the National Front. It said the National Front was trying to create trouble under the pretext of a religious holiday. Police, troops and commandos were called out to deal with yesterday’s demonstration. which began with National Front students trying to parade through the main street after marching on the university grounds. About 180 persons were reported to bavt been hurt. Students claimed that at least one of their number was killed. Police denied this.
