Kainga Railway Crossing
Sir,—ln the interests of public safety, I wish to draw to the notice of the Railways Department and. particularly, of motorists travelling to and from Stewarts Gully and Kaluga the extreme traffic hazard existing at theKainga railway crossing. The view is restricted firstly by a group of tall trees near the bridge approach on the eastern side, and also by lupin bushes growing on and near the railway Line. A similar position appears likely to develop on the western approach where poplar trees growing on Catchment Board property accentuate the danger already existing from the siting of a large building on this property. It is common knowledge among local residents that several near tragedies have occurred in recent times, and my own recent experience, when I was personally involved in an alarming incident, moves me to draw the attention of all concerned to the danger. Some form of warning signal and the removal of the obstructions are urgently required to eliminate the risk of a real tragedy.—Yours, etc.. 15 WATTS. January 9. 1962, (The district railways engineer (Mr G. Shrumpton) said that the trees and growth at tliis level crossing were on land controlled by the local authority and the Railways Department had no power to remove them. The department considered, however, that if the crossing was approached at the maximum legal road speed of 15 miles am hour, the view distances were adequate.]
