MINORS IN LOTTERY
Legal Position Not Clear (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 10. Buying a lottery ticket on behalf of a minor could be a very embarrassing and costly business. Legal precedent seems to indicate that the parent cannot keep the prizemoney and allot all or part of it to a child when he chooses. This view was expressed today by an Internal Affairs Department official when asked to comment on the fact that substantial prizes in the Golden Kiwi lottery have been won by minors. Asked whether it was legal for a minor to buy a ticket on his own behalf, the official said there was a definite prohibition on betting by minors—for instance, through the T.A.B.—but he could not say whether that prohibition applied to lottery tickets. The point was an interesting one and it might be necessary to amend the legislation to clear it up, he said.
