The regional superintendent of the Civil Aviation AdminKStetotfcn (Mr L. E Duke) said yesterday he was unable to say for what periods the equipment would be in use when it was brought back into operation. It all depended on the availability of trained staff, he said.
The new radar equipment was different from that used by the United States Navy in its Antarctic operations, said a Welington spokesman for the administration. Because of technicail reasons the American equipment was unsatisfactory for civil aviation. During the Christmas and New Year period the radar was in use Monday to Friday between 9.30 to 5 pm. sad Mr Duke It was expected to be “more than a week or two.” before it was brought back into service.
