NUCLEAR TESTS
U.S. Plans More
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Jan. 19. The United States will increase its underground nuclear testing in the next few months while preparing for possible tests in the air. The chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on Atomic Energy, Mr Chet Holifield, told reporters of the increased testing yesterday after meeting officials in the nuclear field, the Associated Press reported. He did not say whether the United States would resume atmospheric atomic explosions, but hinted that military leaders had urged this course on President Kennedy. President Kennedy has withheld a resumption of atmospheric tests, but has ordered preparations for them to go ahead. Asked whether Defence Department officers had sought resumed atmospheric tests—broken off by the United States in 1958—the California Democrat replied: “I never knew a general who had enough soldiers or enough guns.”
