500 Fail To Register
_ A bout 20 per cent, of the 2500 20-year-old youths in the Christchurch district, which stretches from ‘he Rakaia rive to the Conway river, have not registered as required by the National Military Training Act. The Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) has said the ballot for the call-up will take place on Tuesday Mr C. P. Collins, district superintendent of the Labour Department in Christchurch, said yesterday that this meant the department would have to consider taking action against who had not registered by that date As well as a penalty for a breach of the National Military Training Act, those who failed to register could suffer the additional penalty of being called up without being in a ballot.
Youth's required to register are those born between July 1. 1941, and June 30. 1942 The registrations were still under 2000. so about 500 had faileo to register, said Mr Collins Letters nad been sent to 440 young men ki.own by the department to be due to register and 300 of them had since applied for registration
“We have found some apprentices who bad not registered We have had about 60 volunteers among those who have registered That means that these 60 or so will go into the call-up without being balloted,” he said
