Building Paper
Authoritative complaints that building practices in New Zealand do not provide sufficiently for fire hazards have been extended to the use of tar-based building paper on sacking beneath the roofs of houses. The way this paper may aggravate fires was discussed last week by Mr C. A. Nightingale, president of the United Fire Brigades Association of New Zealand. The wide use of building paper is encouraged by its ..approval in the standard specifications of the State Advances Corporation, but some thought should be given to reducing the hazard. A suggestion has been made that kraft-type
paper silicone-treated to make it waterproof and impregnated with a fireretardent solution, would be a suitable replacement It seems that several interests, private and official, would be involved in considering a change in practice; and with a multiplicity of advisers the chances of nothing being done would be excellent. The Minister of Scientific and Industrial Research could well initiate inquiries, and press their results upon the State Advances Department and the Standards Institute. Some private member of Parliament should find this a useful topic to pursue next session.
