Great Sensation Has Best Mile In Trials

"The Press’’ Special Service

WELLINGTON, January 18.

Great Sensation revealed that he is capable of making history by winning his second consecutive Wellington Cup when he ran the best mile at Trentham this morning. No horse has won twice consecutively since the distance of the race was increased to two miles in 1942.

From a record point of view the mare, Cynisca, steals the scene, winning in 1890, 1891 and 1892, but the event was then run over a mile and a half.

It was not only Great Sensation's time that was impressive this morning, but also his appearance. He looks better than he did before he won the Wellington Cup last year. He is nine, but he began racing later than most horses and his -areer has been restricted Beauzami was another cup candidate which impressed and the favourite for the event, Nerula. acquitted himself well without exertion Shamrock Queen took the honours among ‘he sprinters running half a mile bril liantly. Bellarook also en hanced his prospects in the Telegraph Handicap with a pleasing five furlongs Sprinters which could have improved on their times were Shangri-La, Rochdale and Cabriere. Wellington Stakes contenders which were seen to advantage were Tara’s Pride. Pipe Dream, Gold Chick. Cobble and Sir Barton. Tara's Pride looked the best of them Galloping took place on the outside of the course proper The footing was perfect Worked Easily Great Sensation (R. Skelton) worked easily from the mile and a quarter to the mile. He came home from there in Imin 44sec, the last seven furlongs taking Imin 31sec. the four 52sec and the final three 37 ’-ssec He was travelling well within himself throughout and would not have blown out a match when he pulled up. That training run confirmed the impression that he will be the most difficult for Nerula to beat. Beauzami (Wyatt) worked easily from the mile to the half, but ran from there in 48 4-ssec and from the three furlongs in 36sec. It was a brilliant effort for a stayer and suggested that he will rin well in the Wellington Cup He looks as well conditioned as any cup horse at Trentham Nerula (Tinsley) was hard held over a mile and a quar ter being allowed to stride out a little freely from the seven furlongs in Imin 32sec He came from the half-mile in 52sec and from the three furlongs in 38 l-ssec. No mure would be required to top him off for the Wellington Cup The best half-mile was by Shamrock Queen (Fisher) which recorded 47 l-ssec the last three furlongs brilliantly in 34 4-ssec. She looks well and has a good form background for the Telegraph Handicap. She has done well at Trentham in the past. The Gore visitor Bellarook (Wyatt) left five furlongs behind without apparent effort in Imin 2 4-ssec. He has been a model of consistency since he won the Stewards’ Handicap at FUecarton in November Shangri-La Wildermoth) was not troubled to run half a mile in 48sec. the final three furlongs taking 35 l-ssec. Rochdale Keen Rochdale (Hughes) was let off with three furlongs in 38sec, being keen to increase the paee throughout. Cabriere (Tinsley) was slightly ahead of Sheonat (Cullen) with Bright Coral (Hart) beaten off at the and of half a mile in 49 2-JSec.

The last three furlongs took 36 3-ssec Cabriere has recorded some of his best performances at Trentham and he looks ready to extend his record in the Telegraph Handicap.

His stablemate, Tara’s Pride came back into calculations for the Wellington Stakes when he easily accounted for Donald Dinnie (Harris), with Harry Lauder (Fisher) struggling some distance back at the end of half a mile in 47 2-ssec. Tara’s Pride ran the final three furlongs in 35sec. He was the oustanding two-year-old of the spring season, bm lost form in his only start at Ellerslie when he was not himself and ran wide. Down the chute Pipe Dream (Edge) and Gold Chick (Andrews) ran half ? mile in 47 4-ssec. Pipe Dream established an early lead, out Gold Chick closed on him ip the final furlong and appeared to be doing the better at the finish Under Hold Cobble (M. Dowling) was hard held to be kept back to Scuffle (Wildermoth i throughout three furlongs in 37 4-ssec. Sir Barton (Cullen) was much too good for Tonnerre (Wyatt) over half a mile in 49 2-ssec. finishing four lengths in front. Tonnerre is not noted for his efforts in training, but neither is Str Barton. Jan Beebe (Wyatt) firmed in favour for the Fitzheibert Handicap when she accounted for her stablemate Prince Manu (Johnson) by a length over half a mile in 49sec. Another candidate for the Fitzherbert Handicap. Rely (Treweek). was doing better than Ascalon (Cullen) at the end of half a mile in 50sec, the final three furlongs taking 37sec. Rely will run out six furlongs more solidly than many of her opponents. Forewarned (Harris) was shading Spartacus (Treweek) and Gold Ruth (N. Eastwood) after running six furlongs in Imin 20 3-ssec. the last four in 51 3-ssec and the final three in 37 4-ssec Gold Ruth conceded her companions several lengths commencing the final two furlongs, but she finished resolutely Timna (Wildermoth) was more impressive than Gay Filou (N Eastwood) over the last seven furlongs of an easy mile tn Imin 34sec There was little between them at the finish after they had _come from the half-mile in 51 l-ssec. and from the three furlongs in 37 l-ssec. Blue Bear (Fisher) completed pacework with a sprint over two furlongs in the straight. He is not engaged till later days of the meeting. Moy (Cullen) strode freely over half a mile in 49sec. coming from the three furlongs In 36sec. She could regain form on the later da vs of the meeting. Last Link (Cowles) was let off with an easy halfmile in 56sec He increased ye pace slightly over the final three furlongs, recording 40sec. Last Link is running out hack nominations at the meeting.

Baalbek (Wildermoth) ran half a mile in 51 2-ssec, running the final three furlongs in 37 3-ssec. CATANIA FIT Catania (Hughes) finished resolutely to beat Dashing Star (J Grylls) and Embrace (Cullen) by half a length at the end of a mile in Imin 46sec. The last half-mile was run in 51 l-ssec, and the final three furlongs in 37 1- Catania won the Great Northern Oaks at her last start and will be respected against the colts in the Gloaming Stakes on Monday Senor (Andrews) travelled easily over a mile, the fastest portions being the last half in 51sec and the final three furlongs in 35 2-ssec. Keeping together, Killian (Cullen) and Share (Wildermoth) ran half a mile in 50 2- coming from the three furlongs in 37 l-ssec Killian is a half-sister to Moy and is to have her second start in the Fitzherbert Handicap. Torrid Time (J Grylls) loafed over seven furlongs, the last four of which were run in 53sec and the final three in 39sec TOO GOOD Quite Able (Wilson) was too good for White Realm (Treweek) over a mile, finishing well clear and recording Imin 46 2-ssec easily He ran the last half in 54sec and the final three furlongs in 40sec It was not intended for Quite Able to work too hard, as he had two searching trials before leaving Riccarton. He looks as well now as he did before he won the Manawatu Cup on Boxing Day Lucky Lu (Hughes) was not after time while running half a mile in 51sec. Sir Henry (J Grylls) followed over the same ground in 51 4-ssec, the final three furlongs taking 38 2-ssec Sand Boy (N.
