BLIND MEN ESCAPE FIRE
Matron Leads 33 To Safety (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. January 18. Thirty-three blind men were led to safety by the matron. Mrs I. Joyce, when fire roared through '.he cellar of Pearson House, a home for blind working men, at Parneh. Auckland, early today Mrs Joyce woke several of tht men and mustered them to safety outside the building when the alarm sounded at 5 20 a.m. The fire, which began in the kitchen where a toaster burnt through the floor into the cellar below, caused moderate damage. Commending Mrs Joyce, the Auckland Chief Fire Officer (Mr G. Drummond) said she did an “excellent job.” “Fire at institutions always worry us because there is often doubt about handicapped people still being in burning buildings." Mr Drummond said Matron at Pearson House for unly three weeks, Mrs Joyce said most of the blind men living there heard the alarm and were able to get themselves away from the burning part of the building
