TROTTING Gold Globe Picked For Main Race At Washdyke

Gold Globe is generally expected to emulate the records of Gildirect and Thunder in the principal races at the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meetings when she contests the South Canterbury Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday.

Gildirect took the honours for C. S. Donald’s Belfast stable in the John Hole Memorial-South Canterbury Handicaps double a year ago. Thunder, which was trained at Templeton by C. C. Devine, completed the same task successfully in 1956. Gold Globe is also Templeton-trained. She is prepared by J. A. Carmichael who is having a highly successful season.

j Gold Globe will be trying for her uhr.-d successive win and her fourth from six starts since she joined the Carmichael stable. Her holiday record included wins in the Reefton and Greymouth Cups and her John Hole : Memorial Handicap victory i last Saturday was most im- ,[ pressive. Although she re- ’ ceived a favourable run in ' that race, the opening which i enabled her to work clear to [ challenge came fairly late and it was only her dogged finish that gained her the 1' honours in the last few ' strides. ' Although the John Hole Memorial was run over 14 furlongs there is no doubt about Gold Globe's ability to master two miles. Both the Reef ton and Greymouth Cups were run over that distance Autumn Folly and Coutaie. both minor place-getters at the Canterbury Park meeting earlier this month, might be the best of Gold Globe’s rivals on the limit, but her strongest opposition is expected to come from among the handicapped horses. In Solid Form Maharaja and Meadow Scott, which share the bacK mark of 36 yards, are both in solid form at present Maharaja’s latest race was the Ashburton Cup on Boxing Day. There he tried to lead for the last mile of two. but lost first place in the last stride to the very capable Falsehood. That was Maharaja’s second race for the season.

Meadow Scott, which has hardly been out of a place since his five-year-old racing began, won his second race within a month by a comfortable margin at Addington on New Yeair’s Day. Neither of i Meadow Scott’s wins were I over two miles, but his reI cord includes five placings over that distance this season.

Mary Mavis, Royal Britannia or Young Dieman, which 'Share the 12 yard mark, do I not appeal greatly art this distance but there will probably be solid backing for Axis and Dandy- Briar, which are on 24 yards with Josie Gay. Axis has won three races this season, including the two-mile City Handicap, in which Meadow Scott was the runner-up. at Hutt Park in October. Axis would match the best of the others in this field for pacing ability, but he is not always too reliable at the start of his races. Dandy Briar, like Gold i Globe, is a last start winner. ;He gained his fifth victory I this season in the Au Revoir | Handicap at Addington on January 2. As a two-miler j he was successful in the Australasian Handicap on the

same course at the New Zealand Cup meeting in November. Dandy Briar and Couthie will form a formidable bracket for C. S. Donald. Beside being the principal race, the South Canterbury Handicap will also be the first leg of the T.A.B. double. Morano Boy There seems little doubt ‘.hat Morano Boy will be a firm favourite in the second leg. the Winchester Handicap. Morano Boy is another trying to win his second race at the meeting. On the first day he outclassed his rivals in the Kerrytown Handicap and that race marked his fourth win in succession. Although he competes in a tighter class fills week, it will be surprising if that brings his winning sequence to an end. All but one of Morano Boy's rivals include the minor place-getters and the beaten horses in the John Hole Memorial last Saturday. Aerobee shaped well in her first race for the season to finish half a head behind Gold Globe. That will make her one of the brighter prospects again. Last season Aerobee won two races and one of them was the Kerrytown Handicap at this meeting.

Young Betty ran the distance out solidly for third last week, but her effort did not look quite as good as that of Adios Heather which finished a neck behind her. Forced Wide Adios Heather began her run from the middle of the field about half a mile from home, had to go three wide all the way around the turn and was forced even wider as they made the straight. Vanese was the best of the others in the John Hole

Memorial and she came home strongly over the latter stages for fifth.

Two of the disappointing runners ,and the two best backed after Gold .Globe, in the John Hole Memorial, were Gqiness and Johnny Dean. Guiness started his run on the inner of Adios Heather at the half-mile, but the best he could manage was seventh.

Johnny Dean was one of the tail-enders all the way and beat four of 15 home. His effort was certainly not in keeping with his very promising third to Holy Smoke and W’nipaway in the Prebbleton Handicap at Addington at his previous start.

The newcomer to the field is Antonius, a last start failure on the second day of the Canterbury Park meeting but a minor place-getter on the first day and a winner over two miles at Hutt Park last month.

Urrall Appeal Adjourned The appeals lodged by W. E. Lowe and I. M. Scoon against terms of disqualification imposed on them last month were opened in Christchurch on Tuesday and then adjourned until February 19. The adjournment was made at the request of counsel. Lowe and Spoon were disqualified for three years after an inquiry had been held into a positive swab returned by Urrall after he had won the Empire Handicap at Addington on November 7.
