Mission House Restoration

AUCKLAND, Jan. 17. Progress has been slow in the New Zealand-wide appeal for £12,000 by the National Historic Places Trust to restore Bishop Selwyn’s mission house at Waimate North The secretary of the trust •Mr B. P. D. F. McEwen) said today that only £lOOO had reached the trust’s office so far.

The trust was determined to restore the house to the original condition and preserve it, he said.

The appeal is the first of its kind made by the trust since its formation in 1954. The trust bought the mission house and the five acres of adjoining land tn 1958. The mission station site was chosen in 1830 by tie RevSamuel Marsden and m 1831-32 the house was built It is next in age to the Kemp house at Kerikeri.

Money from the appeal will be used to reblock and strengthen the foundations fix the floors, return the roof and dormer windows to their engine! shape and shingling repair chimneys and renovate apd repair inside and outside the house.
