RACES AT WIGRAM
Keasons For Late Starts
There had been Ute starts at the Lady Wigram Trophy race meeting in previoua yeara but they had been caused by circumstances entirely beyond the control of the Motor Racing Club, the president of the club (Mr J. A. Brewer) said yesterday.
There had aUo been inaccuracies in the programme, but these had also been through causes beyond the club’s control, such a> Ute entries and post entries received after the programme had gone to press Also, the Wigram race came closely after the races at Ardmore and Levin, and sometimes because of trouble in an earlier race a driver could not take part or had to race in a different car from that entered.
Mr Brewer was commenting on a letter from a correspondent, “Pegasus," who said: “The Motor Racing Club mainUins an unenviable reputation for Ute starts and a gloriously inaccurate programme, year after year, for the Lady Wigram Trophy races. After ail, they don't have to wait for the tote to close, to start a race. The programme shouldn’t produce any more problems than the trotting and galloping clubs face overnight several times a year. Can enthusiasts hope tor better things this time’"
On one occasion starts were delayed when the track began to break up and had to be swept before each race, Mr Brewer said. On another occasion there Was a grass fire and the reaps had to be stopped while it was extinguished. and last year delays were caused by bad weather.
This year the programme was quite up to date except for entries for the motorcycle events. These events were not organised by the Motor Racing * Club, and entries for them had closed after the programme went to the printer. Car entries Were all up to date.
