Jockey Loses Eye
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. Jan. 16.
R. S. McDonald, the 17-year-old Riccarton apprentice jockey, wtho was injured in a fall at the Kumara races on Saturday, has had his right eye removed. McDonald suffered severe head injuries when he fell from Open View in the first race, the Trial Stakes. The loss of his eye means the end of his riding career. An appeal for McDonald, opened on Monday at Hokitika by the Kumara and Westland Racing dubs, has so far realised about £lOO. The appeal will remain open to January 27. Contributions may be made with Mr A. J. De Gold!, the secretary of the Kumara club, in Greymouth, or with Mr T. W. Bryant, the secretary of the Westland club, in Hokitika.
McDonald is expected to be discharged from the Westland Hospital within the next few days.
