MAY DAY IN EAST BERLIN

Christchurch Girls Watched Parade

East Berlin May Day celebrations last year were watched by two young Christchurch women, Misses Margaret Powell and Pru Hilson. Miss Powell, who recently returned to New Zealand, said yesterday that there was no outward evidence of the highly-explosive situation. “Don’t walk on the grass” was the only advice they received from the militia, and the two women were permitted to walk about freely and take photographs. The only hint of any unrest was the complete silence in the crowded streets, as people marched to pay allegiance to the present regime. Adult marchers wore royal blue dungarees or skirts and blouses, and carried East German flags, and banners and placards with slogans by former Communist leaders such as Stalin and Marx. Children carried balloons, doves, or artificial flowers, and were dressed in red or the same royal blue as their elders.
