15ft SHARK HOOKED
Struggle Off Pigeon Bay
A shark more than 15ft long was hooked by a Banks Peninsula farmer. Mr A. C. Reynish, while fishing from a power dinghy off Pigeon Bay heads on Monday afternoon.
Mr Reynish said the shark was so savage and dangerous when pulled alongside the boat that it had to be cut adrift. “We could see the boat was in danger and let him go,” he said.
The shark was purple in colour and “very wide and flat across the head and mouth.” It was about 3ft longer than the power dinvhy. which was 12Jft long Mr Reynish said he had not seen this kind of shark off Banks Peninsula or so many sharks at any previous time There had been a shortage of moki and butterfish, which could have been caused by the depredations of sharks. Earlier. Mr Reynish and a companion caught two smaller sharks. One of these, about 6ft long, they managed to haul aboard.
“We had a terrible struggle holding him.” said Mr Reynish. “They are extremely strong and savage. We got him across the boat with his head over the side. I would not have liked to handle him on my own. I had him by the fail and it was all I could do to hold him.” Mr Reynish said the big shark was caught on a set line baited for groper. Two other big sharks were hooked, but they bit through the line.
