TROTTING Special Trotters’ Race Planned For Addington

A race with special conditions for three and four«year-old trotters will be a feature of the programe for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s autumn meeting to be held at Addington on Saturday, February 10. The race, which will be run over one mile and a half, will carry a stake of £750. There are several promising trotters in both age groups at present in Canterbury and the club should have little difficulty obtaining a satisfactory field.

yards. However, there will be penalties according to the number of wins gained by each horse. Winners of two races will be penalised 12 yards, of three races 24 yards, of four races 36 yards, and of five or more races 48 yards. There ■will be two additional races for trotters on the programme. The Yaldhurst Handicap, of £4OO, will b? run over 13 furlongs with a limit of 3min 51 sec and not faster than 3min 46sec. The Holmes Handicap, which will also be run over 13 furlongs, will have a limit of 3min 45sec. The stake for this race will b» £BOO. The Holmes Handicap appears as the last race on the programme, but if a satisfactory field is not entered, it will become the seventh race and be replaced by the Otley Handicap. The Otley Handicap, over 10 furlongs, will carry a stake of £BOO. The limit will be 2min 45sec. The President’s Handicap, which will carry a stake of £B5O. will be the main race for pacers. It will be run over 13 furlongs with a limit of 3min 37sec Stakes for the meeting will total £5400, an increase of £250 on the amount distributed in 1960 when the club last raced in February. Last season the club gave up its February date to enable the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club to run the Inter - Dominion Championship series that month. It held its autumn meeting on Easter Saturday and gave stakes much higher than usual. The success of the 2.15 p m. •tart of the first totalisator race at the recent summer meeting has decided the com-

Favourites Fail Not one favourite was successful at the Waikato Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday evening. Only four favourites returned place dividends. The shortest price of the night was £4 12s 6d returned by the 2/2 favourite Cindy Lee, winner of the Stewards’ Handicap.

Owner Leaving Mrs L. M. Bradley, of Courtenay, the owner of Ordeal, and her daughter. Miss A. M. Bradley, will leave Christchurch on Thursday on their way to Honolulu. They will join Ordeal in Honolulu and travel from there to the United States, where the mare will race at spring meetings.

Three Wins

M. Holmes is gradually drawing away from his nearest rivals on the list of winning drivers for the current season. He had three wins on the first day of the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Washdyke on Saturday, being successful with Meadow Haze, Crofter and Morano Boy. Holmes has now driven the winners of 23 totalisator races this season. His nearest rival is P. Wolfenden, who has had 19 wins in totalisator races. Both drivers have had successes in non-totalisator events.

Fine Effort Fourina showed she was close to worth-while form when she beat all but Adee in the Waimate Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday. She gave the winner a start of 48 yards and over the last six furlongs raced on the wheel of the leader without a trail. She made a game effort to overhaul Adee in the straight, but failed by half a length. Fourina was having only her second start since early last season and is certain to show sharp improvement. Her long spell away from racing

was because of an injured leg, which appears quite sound now. Fourina showed outstanding ability early in her career and may yet live up to the high opinion formed of her.

Thrived Morano Boy has apparently thrived on racing and his win in the Kerrytown Handicap at Washdyke was most divisive. He gained his first win at Rangiora on December 16 and has won at his only three starts since. He should not be troubled to extend his record in the next few weeks. Trained at Woolston by A. J. Bourne for Messrs I. Roberts and H. E. Dunlop, he is a five-year-old gelding by Morano from Trouble, an unraced mare by Congo Song from Blue Revue, by Grattan Loyal. This family includes several fine winners, including Navy Blue, Blue, Schnapps, Blue Gamble, Petty Officer, Aksarben, Disraeli, Paysan Bleu. Black Wings and Petty Officer.

Stakes Up The Invercargill Trotting Club has decided to increase stakes by almost £2OOO for its autumn twilight meetings on February 24 and March 3. The increase is because of the success of twilight meetings towards the end of last season and again at the opening meeting of the current season. Stakes will increase from £3635 in 1961 to £5570 this year. Several changes have been made in the programme, which now includes a feature race, the Southland Challenge Stakes, for three and four-year-old pacers, on the second day. All classes have shared in the higher stakes. On the opening day the increases range from £l5O for the President's Handicap, which will now carry a stake of £5OO and be run over 13 furlongs with a limit of 3min 45sec. The remaining races have been increased from £5O to £7O.

The Invercargill Cup, on the second day, will be run over two miles for a stake of £650. The limit will be 4m in 41 sec.
