NEW TIMBER SHIPS
Ngakuta, Ngatoro Named (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Jan. 15. The names Ngakuta and Ngatoro, formerly well known in the West Coast timber trade, have been chosen by the Union Steam Ship Company for its two vessels being built at Dundee. Specially designed for the carriage of newsprint, pulp and timber between Tauranga and Australia, the ships will have several features new to vessels in this trade. These include the location of the engine room and al] accommodation aft of the cargo spaces, the fitting of hydraulic hatches, to be operated by push-button control. and the installation of six deck cranes, each of five tons lifting capacity, in place of the conventional winches and derricks. To be launched on January 22, the Ngakuta is expected to be handed over in June, while the Ngatoro will be delivered in July. Each will have a service speed of 12J knots, of 5780 tons dead-weight, each will be 360 ft long and have a beam of 53ft
