CRICKET IN RUSSIA
Australian Tour Sought (N.Z. Preu Aun.—Cepyrl/Mf SYDNEY, January 15. The 1964 Australian test cricket XI may play sever* 1 exhibition matehe* in the Soviet Union on the way home from England. The Federal Government has given diplomatic approval for the trip, and the visit now depend* on th* Australian Board of Control's permission.
The Australian test captain, R. Benaud. said today: “Thia is one of the best ideas I have heard in cricket for years.”
The board's chairman. Sir Donald Bradman, said from Adelaide today: “So far there is no evidence that any cricket is being played in Russia, but we would be delighted to teach them. The more countries that play the game the better.” The scheme is being rponsored by the Australian Old Colletfan*, hosts to the Cricket Club of India team now in Sydney. The Marylebon* Cricket Club ha* given it* approval. It is hoped to arrange for a group of young Russians to watch the 1964 Australian team playing a test at Lord’s.
