R. Laver defeated his Davis Cup team-mate, R. Emerson, 8-6. 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. to win the Australian men's singles championships at White City today. Laver thus continued his domination of Emerson and strengthened his claim to be rated top amateur in the world. Emerson beat Laver in four sets in the 1961 championship and again in the final at the United States championship last September.
But the left-hander Laver has beaten his fellow Queenslander three out of three times in the series of State championships leading up to this year’s Australian titles.
Laver said later that his ambition now would be to try to win all four major titles—the Australian, French. Wimbleton and American championships. Laver expects to leave Australia with Emerson next month.
