ARMY EXERCISE AT TEKAPO
New Gun To Be Fired Todav
One of the New Zealand Army's latest weapons—the 106-millimetre anti-tank gun —will be fired for the first time in the South Island at the Lake Tekapo training area today.
Because the ammunition used is limited and costly, the two guns which will be used in the exercise will together fire only eight rounds The guns fired today will be those of the Ist Otago-South-land Regiment, although the the Ist Canterbury Regiment has two. Both regiments of the 3rd Infantry Brigade Group left Burnham Military Camp on Saturday morning for exercises in the Tekapo area The two regiments are moving into the area alternatively marching and being carried by vehicles.
On Saturday the Ist Canterbury Regiment was “attacked” by a Royal New Zealand Air Force Harvard at the Rakaia bridge Later in the day the Harvard, piloted by Flight Lieutenant W R. Swap, made another lightning “attack” on the Ist O’ago-Southland Regiment at the Upper Rangitata bridge The object was to provide practice in advancing along roads against guerrilla and air operations The group spent Saturday evening in the Burke's Pass area and moved to Tekapo on Sunday Yesterday and today the group will conduct exercises in delaying actions before returning to Burnham tomorrow.
