Use Of Ferns For Cool Effect In Arrangements

IBv

JAY GEE

A low round container is used for the arrangement, which should, for preference, be placed on a table or sideboard against a light-coloured wall so that the dark green of the ferns is shown to best advantage. If no suitable vase can be

Ferns can be used in many summer arrangements to give an appearance of coolness on hot days, particularly when, as in the display sketched above, they are combined with white flowers.

found, an old sponge tin serves quite well, particularly if it has a dull finish. Should it be too bright and shiny, coat it on the outside with brown poster paint which will easily wash off afterwards.

Anchor a pinholder in the middle with three knobs of plasticine underneath. Now choose three fronds of fern, remembering that the darker, older ones will last better, particularly if they have first been submerged in water overnight. Secure the longest frond in the pinholder and a second, slightly shorter one, beside it. The third frond, about twothirds the length of the longest, is then put into place, coming forward and to one side so that it makes the foot of an “L” with the longest frond as the upright. To give weight at the base and link the lines of the fern, arrange at the bottom a sweep of small flowers such as white or pale pink phlox. Place a large head lowest down, a slightly smaller one above that and a smaller one again for the top. There should be no sharp break (in colour as well as line) between the three heads of blooms they should give the appearance of being one. To add to the coolness of the arrangement, hide any of the pinholder which is still showing with small, interest-ingly-shaped rocks. Finally, frame the phlox with a few ivy leaves, which will give extra weight and interest.
