Govt. To Pay £2 Million
(N Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) MELBOURNE, January 15. Under the heading ‘‘N.Z. Reneges on Big Textile Deal," the Melbourne “Sun” says today that the New Zealand Government has committed itself to spending at least £2 million “to buy its way out of a deal made by the former Labour Government with a Lancashire textile group. “When the Labour Government was put out of office three months after the agreement was made. Smith and Nephew asked the incoming Government if it was happy with the deal. The reply was: ‘Very happy,”’ says the “Sun.” “The result is that the mil! is nearing completion and the first of 38 Lancashire families arrived last week to man it. “The decision to revoke the agreement follows six months of agitation by textile wholesalers, textile manufacturers and farmers."
