BOWLS SECTION PLAY IN FOURS FINISHED
Ten Teams Won All Games
The eighth and weary last round of the fours championship in the New Zealand bowling tournament finished yesterday.
One hundred and nineteen fours will now enter the post-section play where the “suddendeath” system, which is not as ominous as it sounds, will dispose of those who have the misfortune to lose one game only. Twenty teams began the day yesterday, confident in the knowledge that no matter what happened they would survive; but a fair majority of the remaining 466 fours stepped to the mats at 9 a.m. grimly determined to secure their one or two victories necessary to avoid elimination.
As one miigtht suppose there were some titanic struggles and if the good people of Christchurch were conscious of a low, reverberating sound it esme from the perpetual crashing of bowls on the 35 greens spread throughout the I city. The day itself was beautifully fine with only a slight wind to provide excuses The greens were hard and dry, ao bare-Looking in fact that someone, doubtless ,a cricketer or quoits player remarked that “the amazing thing about bowling is that you plant grass and then pluck it out again.” And there seemed to be no resistance to the bowls and wide draws were the order of the day. Then teams came through unbeaten which is something of an achievement; but this distinction will not give them any advantages when play start* today. Everyone will begin again from scratch. The unbeaten teams are C. No-la (Gratia), R. Morrison (Waihopai’, G. H. Sturgess (Carlton). T. Myers (Waihi), F. J. Layzell (Devoaport), C. S. Helfyer (Caledonian). R. Brown (Marlborough). C. H. Faul (Waverley). H. A. Barnett (Hataitai) and G. K. Watt (St. Clair). J. H. Rabone (Auckland), T. T. Skoglund (Carlton), R. McDonald (Onehunga). p. C SkoNund (Wellington) and R. S. Eves (West-End, New Plymouth) were among the more prominent who survived. Big Scores Many of the games produced big scores and teams which had previously done well suddenly lost form and went down to more lowly fours. An instance of this was the Kew team skipped by T. D. Mclntosh. With five wins to bis credit it i« probable that he entered the contest with P. S. Turnbull (Rangiora) with a lack of trepidation for Turnbull had not won a game. But Mclntosh was well beaten, 29-14. and the win was richly deserved.
There was a sharp decline hi the form of S. J. Snedden's Linwood four in its morning game against A. R. Pope (Richmond). The Linwood men started the day needing one win to qualify but floundered unhappily through the seven round game, never looking like a team with five wins to its credit. Pope won easily, 28-15. Happily, Linwood’s decline was only temporary and in its afternoon “needle” match against E. S. Butts (Westport R.S.A.)—who also required one win to qualify—the four played like real champions. Snedden regained his old touch and with C. D. Wilkie, bis lead, displaying uncanny skill, Linwood won handsomely. 31-21. to enter postsection play. Rabone had little difficulty in disposing of his first op‘ponent, R. J. Rickerby (Riccarton R.C.). 31-15, and although his second game had its close moments there was nothing dependent on it for Rabone had already qualified and W. C. Fairbrother (Ferrdalton* had been eliminated Good Judgment
The contest betwee. J Rivers, of Cromwell. .1 A. G. Bai’, y, of Canterbury, if it could b” called such was played in a spirit of car.free abandonment. Both teams had 1 cn eliminated. Rivers's rather surprisingly, for Cromwell had been expected to do well. For this game as a mark of affection for their skip the Cromwell players had entered the name “Old Cuth Rivers" on the board but they had also told him that in this match he must lead for a change. Bailey, in an act of humility, also stood down from skip and pride of place was given to G. Humphries, who in his day was one of New Zealand’s outstanding jockeys. H'-mphries made an enormjug difference to his team. Once he drove mightily and everyone shouted ‘‘wrong bias” as t’ e bowl shot off at an -ngle. But Humphries, in his astuteness, had planned it well. The shot hit a bow) well on the wing, came infield and crashed back and fourth among the head, knocking Cromwell’ five shots off kitty. It was indeed a superlative piece of judgment. As the game progressed Humphries developed a penchant for driving, but he never again recalled that grand effort which gave him shot when the enemy held five. Under the impression that Canterbury was winning. Humphries said that the team only did well when he was skipping, but at that stage it was thought that Canterbury was down. None could say with any certainty who held the advantage at the end. When afternoon tea came both teams decided to call it a day and Canterbury, doubtless with the sanction of Cromwell, claimed victory, 27-23. P. C. Skoglund’* Wellington four made aura of survival by
beating S. S. Home (Ashbury), 21-16, in the first game at R.S.A.. a lovely green in a delightful setting. There was some very good bowls in this game, especially from P. O. Skoglund and M. Ingpen, better known perhaps as hooker for the famous Kiwi Rugby team which toured Great Britain after the last war.
Duck’s Mishap An incident involving a duck and a loose electric wire woke many of the spectators out of their torpor at the R.S.A. green in the afternoon. A duck, doubtless on some important mission, took off from Victoria lake and had just reached maximum velocity when it struck and dislodged a stick supporting an electric wire at the back of No. 2 green. The wire sagged and the spectators, probably filled with horrible visions of being flung on to the playing area, rei rved themselves. But. with the usual tranquility of New Zealanders in a crisis they refused to be upset and the players carried on with stoic calm. Only Loa* The St. Kilda four, which previously had a moderate record, distinguished itself by beating E. N. Bromley (Christchurch) in a very close game. It was Bromley’s only loss in four days and when one considers the personnel of the St. Kilda team it is possible to understand Christchurch losing such a game. Two are priests. Father A. Fenelon and Father J. F. McMahan, the third is a policeman. W. A. Shepperd, and the fourth a lecturer at the University of Otago, G. J. Hunter. For the true scholars of the game there was much to appreciate in the play of H. H. J. Robson (Mangakino) and A. L. Taylor (Christchurch); the former requiring one game to qualify, the latter two. Both fours, as befitting the occasion, bowled excellently and. there were some very tight heads In the early stages. Although outdrawn in the middle stages of the game. Robson’s four came into its own during the last 11 heads when Taylor's men lost all semblance of form, Taylor himself heroically undertaking the demanding task of keeping Robson at bay. This he was able to do until the last head when Robson rose majestically to the occasion With his last bowl and with little of the shot bowl, held by Christchurch, to see he played a swinger to nudge it out and lie two shots to win 22-21.
T. H. P. Rennie’s Fendalton four began with five wins and a fairly rosy future. But Rennie trailed quite early in his game against S. R. Warren (Logan Park) for he found it difficult to get his bowls up on the green which was inclined to hold. The morning tea break must have worked wonders, however, for Rennie ove-hauled Warren to win. 30-29. Critical Game
The inevitable happened when F. E Smith (Ashbury), who needed tw games to qualify, met R. Mailman (Vogelmorn), who required one game to survive. Smith led. 8-7, at the eleventh head, but he saw the score mount steadily in Mailman’s favour. Nothing, it seemed, could change the situation and Smith said farewell to any chance to the title when Mailman won. 25-13. Smith’s last game against H. H, J. Robson t Mangakino) was a friendly affair. R. H. Nottingham (Christchurch R.S.A.) had seme very unsettled moments in his game against G. A. Paterson 'West Harbour), a delightful character whose son. J. R Paterson, No. 2 in the same four, is often mistaken for hi- twin brother. Requiring one win to qualify, f’ottingham found himself struggling in the wake of the West Harbour combination until the twenty-second head. the southerners having opened a big gap by virtue of a six on the tenth head. Nottingham prevailed in the end. 28-25. but Paterson’s spirited finish—four shots in the las! three heads—gave him no cause for complacency. The Survivors Those with eight wins are:— Myers (Waihi).
