SHIPMATES STABBED
Seaman Given Gaol Term (NZ. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Jan. 11. "Any man who will pull a knife m an argument and stab two of his mates i* the abdomen is held beneath contempt in this country." said Mr R. D. Jamieson. S.M, when Bernard Joseph McCaffey, aged 21. seaman off the Rangitiki. appeared for sentence in the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington today for knifing two shipmates. He was convicted of assault causing actual bodily harm to Jeffrey Frank Draper and James Bunting Jackson, and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on arch charge. An order for his deportation was also made. The sooner the prisoner was out of the country the better, said the Magistrate. He was extremely lucky he was not facing at least one murder charge. Having regard to the horrible nature of the crimes the maximum penalty seemed comparatively light. This was an act of a complete coward. For the defence. Mr 3. F. Jeffries said McCaffey was brought up in Belfast in **a rather more highly complex civilisation than we have here,” and that should be borne in mind when the act of stabbing was considered.
