New Postal Official Was Rugby Representative
Mr C. E. Evans, a former! Hawke’s Bay Rugby representative and Wellington selector and a well-known | sportsman in other fields, took up his duties yesterday as deputy chief postmaster, Christchurch. Mr Evans was previously senior supervisor. clerical branch. Chief Post Office. Wellington. His position in Christchurch is new, one of three recently created in the three largest centres. He will act as liaison officer between district post offices and the central office, counselling postmasters and co-ordinating the services provided. The other deputy chief postmaster, Mr J. W. Lincoln, will have special responsibility for the traffic branches in the Chief Post Office. Mr Evans joined the department in June, 1926. in Napier as a message boy. He went to Wellington as an accounts branch cadet in 1933, and, except during his war service, remained in the capital until his present
appointment. From 1948 until 1958 he was staff welfare officer to the Chief and General Post Offices, and for five years up to 1957 was service representative on the Post Office Appeal Board. During 1932-33, Mr Evans represented Hawke’s Bay at Rugby, playing alt first or second five-eighths. When he went to Wellington, however, he was up against tough competition from the F. Kilby-R. Page All Black combination, and had to content himself with a place iin the Wellington B side. He was later coach for the Taita club and assistant provincial selector, with particular responsibility for colts’ teams. Mr Evains’s son. Mr D. A. Evans, is following in his father’s footsteps as far as Rugby is concerned. D. A. Evans has represented Manawaitu several times as a forward, and has appeared consistently for Massey Agricultural College, where he has recently been appointed to a lectureship.
Mr C. E. Evans is also a tennis player and an indoor bowler. He was foundation president of the Dyer Street Tennis Club in Lower Hutt and served for eight years until he left for Christchurch. He still plays regularly and his daughter is also a keen player. He has been am active member of the Dyer Street Indoor Bowling Club for several years. In 1950 Mr Evans was made a Justice of the Peace, and for 15 years up to 1960 he was chairman of the Dyer Street School Committee. Mr Evans went overseas in 1940 with the Second Echelon and became adjutant of the Fourth Field Artillery Regiment. On returning to New Zealand in 1945, he served as adjutant of the Officers’ Training Depot at Army Headquarters, Plimmerton. He was educated at Napier Boys’ High School.
Visit By Frigate.—The Australian frigate Gasgoyne wall now join New Zealand Navy ships taking part in the Waitangi Day celebrations in the Bay of Russell on February 6. The 1500-ton River class ship will go direct to Russell from Australia.—(P.A.)
