BRABIN CUP TEAM
272 Before Tea “The Press" Special Service HAMILTON, Jan. 10. Winning the toss and batting, the Canterbury Brabin Cup team made a good showing to score 272 before tea on the first day of its twoday match with Hamilton played at Galloway Park today, Sound batting by G. Beer and W. Thomson took the score to 78 but it was the 148 partnership in 80 minutes by P. Coman and M. Ryan that ensured a good total. Coman's driving on both sides of the wicket was a treat to watch and when he was run out at 79 he had hit seven fours, one six and four three’s. Ryan was not so aggressive as Coman but always dealt severely with anything short or overtossed. G. Clarke was the best bowler for Hamilton and his of 33 overs, 11 maidens, 79 runs, five wickets were well deserved. Three Canterbury batsmen were run out, two by bad calling. The Canterbury opening bowlers, B. Taylor and C. Reid, were not impressive and the Hamilton openers, S. Mitchell and R. McKinnon were quick to take advantage of the gift full tosses sent up by Taylor and the first change, M. Lester, and raced to 50 in 30 minutes. It was left to the spinners, J. Logie, Ryan and W. Thomson to break through. Logie bowled well, but again suffered through dropped catches. Scores were:— Canterbury Brabin Cup team, first innings. 272 (P. Coman 79, M. Ryan 52, W. Thomson 36, G. Beer 28, C. Reid 18 not out; G. Clarke five for 79). Hamilton, first innings, 133 for four (S. Mitchell 41, R. McKinnon 32; M. Ryan two for 22, J. Logie one for 11, W. Thomson one for 20).
