DESIGNED BY CITY GRADUATE

The engineering design work of the roof of the new Commonwealth Institute building in Holland Park. Kensington, London, was the work of a graduate of Canterbury University School of Engineering, Mr I. C. Smith. The roof, seen in the photograph, is about 200 ft. square and consists of 3in concrete in a hyperbolic paraboloid structure. It will be covered with copper plates. Mr Smith, who has recently returned to Christchurch, designed the roof while work-

ing for a London firm of consulting engineers under a Federation of British Industries scholarship. This scholarship enables students to undertake training in Britain by working for an industrial firm. The work on the roof took him 15 months. The Commonwealth Institute will house exhibits from Commonwealth countries. It is not expected to be open for about a year. Mr Smith graduated with a master of engineering degree from Canterbury. While

at the university he held a Ministry of Works bursary and a Canterbury Frozen Meat Company scholarship. He went overseas on the F. 8.1. scholarship and a New Zealand University scholarship in engineering which enabled him to study for a year at the Imperial College of the University of London. He was in Britain for thre* year*. Mr Smith has been appointed an assistant engin«er with th* Ministry at Work* in Wellington
