MEAT FOR MOSLEMS
“Market Ready To Tap” (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 10. Slaughter houses in which sheep are killed facing Mecca in the traditional Moslem manner, may before long come into existence in New Zealand. This is one of the requirements which must be fulfilled if this country wants to tap a small, but steadily growing market at its front door.
The market is Malaya, where the great bulk of imported meat must be killed according to Moslem rites. The New Zealand Trade Commissioner in Malaya (Mr W. L. Middlemass) said in Dunedin tonight that because this concession had not yet been made. New Zealand sales of mutton in Malaya were handicapped. The present Malayan market for mutton was limited, he said, but like the market for other primary products, it was growing with the increasing standard of living. For New Zealand to capture a significant share of it, it must make the concession to the Moslem religion. The carcases must bear the stamp of the Moslem Religious Council. To qualify for this the animal had to be killed in a certain manner. One condition was that it must be free from “contamination” from other meat. Australia has agreed to inspection by the council’s representatives, but so far New Zealand had not.
