Great Sensation Heads Wellington Cup Weights

The Wingatui galloper. Great Sensation, has been given top-weight of 9-6 by the Wellington Racing Club’s handicapper, Mr R. N. Bluett, in the £10,126 Wellington Cup, to be run at Trentham on January 20. Great Sensation, a nine-year-old, beat the Riccarton galloper Quite Able by a head in the cup last year, when he carried 9-2. This year, although he has 41b more. Great Sensation will meet Quite Able on better terms. Last year Quite Able carried 8-1. His wins since have included the New Zealand and Manawatu Cups and his weight this year has risen to 8-11. Nerula, the closest of seconds to Quite Able in the New Zealand Cup, has been rated second under Great Sensation. Nerula has 9-5, which is 71b more than the third topweight, the Hastings galloper, Picaroon. Nerula won his three starts at the winter meeting at Trentham in July. At his clash with Great Sensation at the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton in November, Nerula was an easy winner at weight-for-age in the Canterbury Cup. Nerula and Great Sensation were at level weights on that occasion, so Nerula will have an advantage of 11b here. Quite Able and Picaroon will also meet Nerula on worse terms than at their last clashes. When Quite Able won the New Zealand Cup he carried only 7-12 to Nerula’s 9-5, so he will be 131 b worse off. Picaroon carried 8-11 when he beat Nerula in the Hastings Gold Cup last month. Nerula carried 9-10 into third place. At Trentham, with 8-12, Picaroon will be at a disadvantage of 61b. South Island entries in the cup besides Quite Able are Desert Chief, Llanmai, Gay Defoe, and Quick Time. Desert Chief is closest to the top-weights with 8-7 Quick Time, which carried 7-3 into third place in the New Zealand Cup, has 7-9. Gay Detoe has 8-2 and Llanmai, which is unlikely to run, has 8-6.
