RACING Kastanea Has Earned Trent ham Campaign
The Waikouaiti Cup winner, Kastanea, will probably accompany his stablemate, Quick Time, north next week for racing at the Wellington Cup meeting. Kastanea has earned a Trentham campaign with some solid form. He ran Quick Time close in the Timaru Cup, and could make a show in middle distance handicap races at Trentham.
Quick Time and Kastanea •re trained at Riccarton by J. L. Barr, who has brought Roman Maid back into work. Quick Time did striding work on the plough at Riccarton yesterday. He is a hardy veteran, and looks as if he has thrived since his Timaru Cup win. He is 10. and will be the veteran of the Wellington Cup field this year. Quite Able, one of the early favourites for the Wellington Cup, also did pace work on the plough at Riccarton yesterday.
Tough Treble He is hard and muscular, in great shape for an attempt to complete a great stayer's treble —the New Zealand. Mamawatu, and Wellington Cups. Quite Able will probably gallop on the outside of the course proper tomorrow and again on Saturday, and he will be taken north early next week. Vitamise and Cheyenne, two good Riccarton milers with engagements at Trentham. sprinted pleasingly on the plough yesterday. Vitamise <W. Beck) was going well alongside Toa <G W. Mein) finishing six furlongs in Imin 17 l-ssec. They quickened to sprint the final three furlongs in 37 3-ssec. Vitamise won the mile January Handicap at Trentham a year ago, and has seldom raced badly there. His form on the smaller courses belies his ability. He is unable to run within a •tone of his best form on the turning tracks, and has been an expensive failure at times. Cheyenne Sprints Cheyenne (C. T. Wilson) •printed six furlongs in Imin 17 4-ssec. He was joined for the last half mile by the two-year-old Yosemite (Mrs
V. D. Clutterbuck) and they recorded 38 3-ssec for the final three. Cheyenne has put on condition since he raced at Wingatui. He lost some skin in a float accident after the Dunedin meeting, but missed no work. However, he was without a galloping companion for a time, and he loafs in solo training tasks. His first race at Trentham will be the Anniversary Handicap on Saturday week. C. T. Wilson will ride him. Cheyenne’s stablemate, Francisco, felt the hard ground when he started another campaign during the holidays, and he has been put aside for a few weeks. The trainer, A. J. Williams, has decided against going ahead with a Trentham campaign for Paua, but he will go north next week with the consistent Picright. Picright has shown ability from a mile upward, and he could do well at Trentham. He will probably have two
tests as a miler, and if he shapes well he may be switched to a mile and a half in the Summer Handicap on the final day of the meeting. Bad Run In Cup Picright’s latest racing was done at Washdyke, where he won the Christmas Handicap and was third after a bad run in the Timaru Cup. Royal Appeal, winner of two maiden races at Washdyke, will probably race next at Kumara on Saturday. She showed high speed to run three furlongs in 36 l-ssec on the plough yesterday. The stablemates Share (D. N. Hadfield) and Belleville (R. McDonald) sprinted half a mile on the trial grass in 51 l-ssec. Belleville, with a pull in the weights, was going well alongside her better-per-formed companion at the end. Share outclassed the two-year-olds on the second day of the Timaru Cup meeting last month.
