Favourites Beaten In Cornwell Cup

NEW PLYMOUTH. Jan. 9. Wins by Plimmerton and Tauranga on the second day of the Cornwell Cup contest for Z class yachts today left the contest wide open. When the third and fourth races were held In light winds under brilliantly fine skies, the hot favourites. Auckland and New Plymouth, both returned very average efforts after scoring outstanding wins yesterday. Decisions in protests arising from today’s events have still to be announced. Plimmerton's morning victory in the third race came as a surprise after the crew's seventh and tenth places in the first two races. But in the light and variable winds today, the crew showed outstanding mastery of the conditions to win by 17 seconds from another backmarker. Lyttelton. For the afternoon event the wind remained fairly stable and easily the closest racing of the series saw the lead change constantly. It was a battle of tactics among the Auckland. New Plymouth. Tauranga, Wellington, and Paremata crews, with Tauranga being first away, but losing distance to be third halfway through the course. Greatly improved sailing brought them into the lead again. The first three place-getters. Tauranga, Wellington, and Paremata. crossed the line with little more than one minute between them. The Paremata crew of G. Shapland and W. Paul have been the most consistent of the competitors. In the four races so far run they have gained one second, two thirds, and a fifth. After the hearing of a protest and an incident reported by a floating judge during Monday's racing, Tauranga and Titahl Bay were disqualified from the first and second races respectively.
