Second Round Of Open (N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU, Jan. 9. L. Middlemiss (Pukekohe) took the first game of the rubber playing steadily and making two of his hoops with spectacular jump shots against H Ford (Wellington) in the second round of the open championship in the South Island croquet championships at Tirnaru today. However, in the second and third games Ford struck form and won the rubber comfortably. In the men's championship Ford reached the final of the second life by beating W. B. C. Painter (Lower Hutt). Ford peeled both his balls through the last hoop then pegged out one ball. Later he hit in a long shot to win the game. Results:— Open —H. Ford (Wellington) beat L. Middlemiss (Pukekohe). 23-26. 26-12 26-5. Semi-finals: Ford beat Mrs W. Salton (Oamaru). 26-10 26-3. Women—First life, semi-final: Mrs B. Jarden (Lower Hutt) beat Mrs Middlemiss. 26-10; Mrs L. Hight (Morrinsville) beat Mrs H. Dempsey (Waimate). 26-18. Men.—Second-life, final: Ford beat W. B. C. Paynter (Lower Hutt). 26-3. Doubles.—First life: Second round: A. E. Saalfield (New South Wales) and Paynter beat Mrs C. Bishop (Ash.) and Mrs C. Wilton (T.), 26-6. Semifinal: Mrs Dempsey and A. J Bonisch (Gore) beat Saalfield and Paynter. 26-17, Second life, semi-finals: Middlemiss and Mrs Middlemiss beat H Darby and Mrs W Walker. 26-8.
