Country Districts And N.Z. Draw

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)

KIMBERLEY, January 8. The New Zealand cricketers drew their two-day match against South African Country Districts at Kimberley today. Districts was set 240 runs to make in 190 minutes for victory after M. Chapple had declared the New Zealanders’ second innings closed 20 minutes after lunch at 167 for five with an over-all lead of 239 runs. When play ended Districts was still 50 runs short of the target with three second innings wickets standing. Districts can attribute a creditable draw to a fine aggressive innings of 98 not out by E. Eaglestone in 119 minutes with nine fours and two sixes. He and P. L. Erasmus added 77 runs for the sixth wicket. They held up the New Zealanders’ attack for 80 minutes after the side had lost its first five wickets for 82 runs. At that stage New Zealand looked like achieving a breakthrough with five District wickets to capture in the last 100 minutes while it still had a lead of 158 runs. Chapple used himself and J. C. Alabaster in the attack to bait the batsmen but when Eaglestone scored 28 runs in 19 minutes he took himself off and brought on G. Bartlett and R. C. Motz at one end while still keeping the game open with Alabaster and J. T. Sparling at the other end. N. V. Cole, who made 25 in a little more than an hour with six off Alabaster and two fours, batted well. The highlights of the New Zealand innings were the halfcentury in even time by P G. Z. Harris, a fine 71 by J. Guy, and a solid 30 by G. T. Dowling. The New Zealanders leave

Kimberley for Bloemfontein tomorrow morning. Scores were:— NEW ZEALAND
