MORE HEPATITIS CASES
Nine Notified Last Week
Nine cases of infective hepatitis and one of cerebrospinal fever comprised the 10 cases of notifiable diseases reported in the Christchurch health district last week.
The infective hepatitis patients were all from the Waimairi county areas of the city or from North Canterbury. A family infection at Culver-den claimed three victims, a man and his wife and their son. At Sefton a 20-year-old youth went down with the disease, and at Cust an adult man. In the Waimairi county the victims were a man and three children.
The Medical Officer of Health (Dr. L. F. Jepson) said yesterday that the higher incidence of the disease was a seasonal trend, noticeable throughout the country. Cases here were still fewer than in most other places, he added.
The patient with cerebrospinal fever was a Christchurch boy, aged 15, who was now in the Christchurch Hospital and showing improvement in his condition The germ responsible for the disease was carried by quite a large number of persons, said Dr. Jepson, but only a comparatively small number of persons became ill with it An 18-month-old boy was discharged from the Christchurch Hospital yesterday after being treated for some days for poisoning. He drank turpentine which he found at home.
