ENTRY FOR CUP
Application To
Be Made
The Russian application for entry to the European zone of the Davis Cup. reported yesterday morning, might make it more difficult for New Zealand to get its application accepted, said the chairman of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association management committee (Mr F. S. Ramson> at Wilding Park yesterday. Mr Ramson said the management committee had met the selectors (Messrs M. C. Healey, of Canterbury, S. Painter, of Wellington, and A. S. Burns, of Auckland) and had told them of the intention to lodge an immediate application for entry in the Davis Cup. The decision would not be known till the end of the month and the application could be rejected.
Therefore the selectors would not be asked to name a team until the end of January. By that time the Auckland invitation tournament and the New Zealand junior championships, both of which might have a bearing on the names, especially the invitation tournament, would have been completed, said Mr Ramson.
“If we are accepted, and I think we will be, we are then committed to send a team," he said. "We are not in favour of sending a minimum team of two for that is far too risky. We favour a team of four—if we can finance it.”
In reply to a question. Mr Ramson said the matter of a manager had not been decided but that was also affected by the financial aspect.
Only about four teams from outside Europe are admitted to the zone each year and two years ago when the New Zealand application was declined, an entry was made in the American zone which closes later. Mr Ramson said yesterday that if this year's application was refused the same course would be considered.
