YEARLING SALES

Lower Prices

Forecast

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. Jan. 8.

The New Zealand yearling sales had again attracted Australian interest, but prices might not be as high as in previous years, the “Melbourne Herald" racing writer, J. Elliott, said today. ‘‘lt does not seem likely that the record price of 7000 gns paid for Tulloch’s Sister, last year will be passed,” he said.

The Victorian trainers, P. Burke, J. Mulcahy, N. Creighton, B. Conaghan, A. Armanasco, J. Cerchi and R. Clarton are making the trip. J. L. McDonald, a New Zealander training in Victoria, is also going. “T. J. Smith and H. Plant are going from Sydney and C. P. Hayes from Adelaide." Elliott said the well-known bloodstock authority, Mr M. Marshall, had instructions to buy for a number of owners. “Last year the sales were hit by the Australian credit squeeze and the average for the sale was down about 33 per cent.”

Elliott said this year 404 lots will be offered, comprising 248 colts and 156 fillies.

A message from Wellington says G. Moore, toe leading Sydney rider, is also coming over, mainly for the yearling sales. Moore is founding a new thoroughbred stud in New South Wales and recently purchased a stallion in England. No doubt his main interest while here will be in foundation female stock for his stud. It is not known whether Moore will accept any rides at the Wellington Cup meeting. His only mount in a race in New Zealand was a successful one. He rode Surrey Gold to win the Nursery Handicap with 9-12 on the second day of the Wellington Cup meeting in 1953.

The Melbourne jockey. R. Hutchinson, who has had an exceptionally good year in Britain, intended to visit New Zealand this month but advice was received today that he has cancelled his bookings.
