YACHTING Wellington Boat Leads After Two Leander Trophy Races

(From Our Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON. January «. Christchurch and Wellington skippen took the honoun in the first two races of the Leander trophy contest sailed at Worser Bay today. G. S. Mander. of the Canterbury Yacht Club, won the first race, and G. Gibbs, of Muritai. the second, but Gibbs is leading on points after a lapse by Mander in the afternoon race.

In the morning Gibbs was always within striking distance of Mander and came home second. In the afternoon event he opened up a gap soon after the start and increased his lead over the three-lap triangular course to finish nearly 10 minutes ahead of the fleet.

The Timaru boat Rebel 2. sailed by J. Dickson and I. Carey. overtook Manders Frenzy a third of the way round the course and took second place. Frenzy was third. In each race the first five boats were well ahead of the rest of the fleet. Gibbs's magnificent win in the afternoon was a fine display of light weather handling, and it was probably the most decisive thrashing Mander has ever had in his many years of championship sailing. The performance of Rebel 2 was also applauded by yachtsmen and spectators. Seven of the first nine boats home in the morning were from Canterbury. The top Auckland boat Encore (K. Rushbrook) could do no better than sixth in the morning and ninth in the afternoon.

A good performance in the first race was given by the twin

brothers, J. L. and D S. McArthur, who last season represented Canterbury University in sailing. Their boat. Phoenix, was ninth at the line but was put about by A. W. Shields’* Vision and capsized, losing two places. A. F. Burgess, sailing K. Frier’s Hi Fi ifrom Christchurch). went over the course in the first race with the handicap of a load of water in his after bulkhead—he had forgotten to close the stern traps A worthy effort was that of B. J. C. Wall in Impetuous in the second race. Wall, today, was in good form.
