German Prize For Benjamin Britten
The Hanseatic Gothe Prize of the Stein and Schiller Foundation has been awarded to Benjamin Britten, who has agreed to accept it The prize will probably be presented to the composer early this year by the Rector of the Hamburg University.
It is believed to have been granted to Mr Britten in connexion with the first performance in Hamburg last year of his new opera, "A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” This is the third occasion within the last decade when the Stein and Schiller Foundation has made an award to an Englishman: in 1954 Mr T. S. Eliot received the Goethe Prize, and in 1960 Sir Herbert Griffin the van Tienhoven Prize.
