Attitude To Life

To acquire judgment and balance, every person must learn self discipline, a sense of unity with the rest of humanity and a sense of purpose, the Governor-General (Lord Cobham) told Scouts at the opening of the jamboree.

“Many young people today lack a sense of purpose. So they shrug their shoulders, let their hair down both physically and metaphorically and dress in absurd clothes to attract attention, and let life drift by." he said. I U J These young people had only one thing wrong, but it was a very important one, the Governor-General said. “They are under the impression that life owes them something they don’t know what it is, so they look surly and puzzled. They don t know where to look for it so they wander about aim-

lessly and stand in little group* at street comers. "Now I’m all for revolt, and youth is the time for revolt, but there are plenty of revolting things to be put right cruelty and injustice and litter, for instance. 'To revolt against life itself a* these young people do Is like a fish revolting against the sea or a bird against the air."

Lord Cobham said this was an era of new nationalism, and yet never had it been so necessary for people to get closer together and try to understand each other's problem*. "We tend to hypnotise ourselves these day* into believing that nuclear science and advanced technology have somehow changed the world

"They haven’t. The world consists of people, and people have hardly changed at all. “Man remain* the eternal riddle mere raw material unless and until various force* work upon him and enable him to acquire judgment and balance. "And these force* are. self discipline, a sense of unity with the rest of humanity, and a sense of purpose,” Lord Cobham said.

Fire Call At Camp (N.2 Pres* Association) DUNEDIN, Jan. 7. The first fire call that security had received at the Boy Scouts’ jamboree occurred today. It augured well for the rest of th* w*ek, for within 30sec of receiving the call by tel«phon* at 2.30 p.m., two fire units w*r* on the road. Th* siren sounded and a publie address system announced that there was a tent on fire at Kettle «üb-camp. On arrival, th* units, manned chiefly by Rover Scouts, found that the call had been a justifiable false alarm.
