AUTOMATIC IRRIGATION.—This photograph shows a canvas dam sheet held above the race by a timing and release device. Under this system, now being used by some farmers, when the sheet is released it forms a seal in the race so that water overlaps sills opposite a series of borders. In this photograph, taken at the Winchmore irrigation research station, irrigation is being done on a back-stream basis.
