FIJI FINDS FORM

Lead Against Wellington (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 5. Fiji led Wellington by 11 runs on the first innings and had scored 15 for the loss of two wickets in its second innings at stumps today on the first day of the two-day match at the Basin Reserve. R. W. Blair and B. D. Morrison did the early damage in Fiji’s first innings, then J. St. J. Parson ripped the middle out of it. The opener. H. J. Apted, remained as his partners went. He saw the 50 come up in 55 minutes, and in partnership with Sorovakatini, the 100 in 86 minutes. The pair added 59 in 37 minutes before Sorovakatini was dismissed. Just before the luncheon adjournment Apted reached his century. With the aid of two run-outs Wellington finally ended Fiji's innings for 206 after 178 minutes’ batting. Wellington was five down before it reached 90. However. Standidge held on and reached his 50 in 80 minutes. With Butler he added 45 for the sixth wicket. Then Valentine had a spell with the ball. He dismissed Standidge for 63 and then Butler for 28 Parson and Morrison came together with the total at 158. They slowly added runs, getting within 11 of Fiji's score in a dramatic last-wicket—and lastditch—stand before Parson was dismissed. Two quick wickets fell when Fiji batted again.
