Treaty 4500 Years Old
The worlds oldest known peace treaty, ending 50& years of border warfare be’ween t’-- Sumerian States of ragash and Umma, was displayed recently at an exhibition of Yale University’s Babylonian Collection in New Haven, Connecticut. The 4500-year-old treaty, a chunk of baked clay shaped like a Rugby ball, is covered with tiny cuneiform signs. The terms were dictated bv Etemena. Governor of Lagash. who instructed his people to dig a canal and create a no-man's-land along the frontier. A historical "footnote” to the treaty exists in the Louvre in Paris where a clay tablet records that, less than a century later, the people of Umma invaded Lagash and laid the countryside to waste. —(U.N.E.S.C.O.
