AKAROA HOTEL FIRE
Safe Recovered And Opened
Between £3OO and £lOOO was reported to be in the safe of the Hotel Metropole. Akaroa when the fire occurred there on Wednesday. The money was the hotel’s takings for the New Year period and for the week before. It was in a safe in the ground-floor office. After the fire the safe was opened with crowbars and an acetylene torch. About £3O was recovered in coin, but masses of charred banknotes were found inside. All cheques were reported to be destroyed.
The notes w’ere said to be in fairly good condition, and all notes with the serial numbers intact will be able to be replaced. Mr B. P. King, the hotel licensee, asks that all persons who cashed cheques at the hotel during the New Year period reissue them. A temporary bar was opened in a garage in the yard of the hotel at 9 am the day after the fire. Another temporary bar is now being built and should be ready for use soon. It is being built of wood and iron on the fire site, which has nowbeen bulldozed clear of rubble. The bar will be 30ft long. Mr A. G. Bryant, owner of the hotel, went to Akaroa yesterday to see the temporary facilities Mid discuss the state of affairs with Mr King.
