VESSELS ON THE WATERS.—In “The Ship,” Bjorn Landstrom comprehends 6000 years of man’s associations with the waters of the world. Beginning with the obelisk ships and Paprus rafts on the Nile, going on to the Mediterranean shipping of classical times and to the ships of the Vikings, the story continues with the vessels of the great maritime explorers and the naval warriors and the traders. In the end, the story is brought up to date with discussions about the most modern ships—merchant ships, naval ships, and the latest tankers, ice-breakers, and nuclear-powered ships. The striking thing about the book is the skill with which Bjorn Landstrom conveys to his readers, by word and drawing, his absolute command of his subject. The picture is a reproduction of the frontispiece Mr Landstrom has drawn for the book. In its fine line and detail, the picture is typical of the 800 drawings in black and white and colour in the book. “The Ship” is published by Allen and Unwin.
