Food By The Ton For Jamboree
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, January 5. It is to be hoped the 2700 scouts encamped at Wairoa are good trenchermen. They have about 20 tons of eating ahead of them. A huge quantity of food has been ordered. Placed end to end, the various items would make a line that would stretch up the five-mile length of Whare Flat and back several times. The sausages and luncheon sausage alone could be strung out to a third of a mile. The quartermaster, Mr Cl
F. Rudd, stopped thinking of sausages, eggs and cabbages for a moment yesterday to give a few details of the victuals he has ordered to keep the jamboree stomach filled. He estimates that the total food cost will be about £9500. It took two six-ton trucks to carry the dry stores alone, without the huge quantity of perishables. Between eight and nine tons of meat has been ordered, including 40001 b of sausages, 35001 b of luncheon sausage bs
well as corned beef, chops and steak. The main items of food they will dispense during the week of the jamboree are:— Bread, 12,000 21b loaves and 20.000 rolls; 40001 b of butter; 2000 gallons of milk; 20001 b of cake: 35001 b of fresh fruit; 13.000 cartons of ice cream: 24.000 eggs; 5000 lettuces and cabbages; 15.0001 b of potatoes; 24001 b of carrots; 3000 tina of peas and beans; 4000 tins of fruit; 2500 tins of jam; 2400 tins of spaghetti and baked beans.
