Auckland Needs 143; Cunis Wrecks Central Innings

(Neto Zealand Press Associatio

AUCKLAND. January 5. A brilliant spell of bowling by R. S. Cunis, the Auckland med-ium-fast bowler carried Auckland to a strong position over Central Districts at the end of the second day of the Plunket shield match at Eden Park this afternoon.

Cunis took seven Central Districts second innings wickets for 29 runs and when he took two wickets in his last ever. Central Districts were out for 146. the lowest score so far in a lowscoring match Auckland had a first innings lead of four runs and thus required 143 runs for victory. In nine minutes before stumps Auckland scored four without loss.

The pitch played a large part in the collapse of Centra] Districts. It was still grassy and the faster bowlers were able to make the ball rise sharply and occasionally a worn patch gave a shooter. However, the batting was sound until Cunis broke open the Centra] Districts innings after tea. Auckland resuming at five for 84, was immediately in trouble when P. P. W. Morris and L. A. Clark were out to the outstanding Nelson 20-year-old bowler B Hampton, when the score was 88 W. B. Norman, now more of a bowler than a batsman held the innings together in masterly fashinn. and was still unbeaten when it closed soon after lunch.

Hampton finished with the outstanding figures of 38 overs. 21 maidens 50 runs and five wickets.

G. E. Lowans and L. B Reade opened the Central Dis-

tricts’ Innings soundly and quietly. The Auckland attack began to look a little thin. Then L. A. Green, the offspinner. brought off a tremendous break and bowled Reade and 15 runs later he bowled Lowans round his legs. In his first over after tea. Cunis had M. Shrimpton legbefore and P. Maunder beaten and bowled. From then on he carved up the innings, and only a dogged stand by Hampton, who looked a most useful batsman. and I. Mummery, halted the procession. These two scored 27 for the eighth wicket. But when Cunis came back for his third spell, he took the last two wickets with his first five balls Auckland thus have a full day of play to score the winning runs with 10 wickets in hand, and the task should not be too difficult.
