MR HAYMAN’S FUNERAL

Attendance Of 3000

(From Our Own Reporter) WAIMATE. January 4. The homestead, Opiro, at Studholme Junction, was packed this afternoon with persons who had come to the funeral of the Minister of Agriculture (Mr T. L. Hayman), who died on Tuesday. There was an estimated attendance of 3000 persons, among them Cabinet Ministers and representative* of organisations associated with Mr Hayman's portfolio. Pall-bearers at the homestead were Messrs Pat Hayman, Peter Hayman (sons), Norman Hayman, and A. F. Hayman (brothers), A. R. Wilson (son-in-law), and E. C. Wright (brother-in-law). At the service at the Waimate Cemetery the pall-bear-ers were the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake). the DeputyPrime Minister (Mr Marshall), the Minister of labour (Mr Shand), the Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan), the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine), and Mr H. Hewitt, who was private secretary to Mr Hayman.

The funeral cortege was one of the longest ever seen in the district snd the large number of wreath* received testified to the widespread respect in which Mr Hayman was held.

The Rev. I. J. Clucas. of St. Paul's Methodist Church, Waimate, gave the funeral address.

“This place in which we are gathered for these last rite* of respect is the place m which Mr Hayman grew up and this is the community in which from early day* he took his place, not a* a specbut a ’ an ®«tive worker and leader.” Mr Clues* said. “He won for himself honour and respect and yet remained humble and understanding.'*

The masonic ceremony wa* conducted by Mr D. Scott, of Lodge Ngaoara, Oemaru. of which Mr Hayman had bees a member.
